We are currently looking for a Design Engineer to join the team in Leiden.


As a Design Engineer, you will be responsible for creating CAD designs of space products tailored to specific needs, which vary for each mission. This will happen in close collaboration with Lead and Systems Engineers, the specialized mechanical and thermal engineering experts, the Materials & Processes department, and the skilled Assembly & Integration Team.

Design Engineer

Main responsibilities 


  • You will use CAD software (CATIA V5) to design Solar Array components, from initial concept to final production drawings
  • You will create detailed 3D CATIA models and precise 2D drawings to guide production, including tolerances and specifications for surface treatments
  • You will prepare production drawings and, when necessary, collaborate with procurement to ensure manufacturability
  • You will design structural components and assemblies with an emphasis on weight, cost, performance, and safety using advanced design tools
  • You will identify necessary technical tasks for each development phase, ensuring compliance with regulatory and program standards
  • You will provide technical input during design reviews and work closely with the Materials & Processes team to select appropriate materials and processes for each design element
  • You will ensure designs allow successful integration of all components into a cohesive product
  • You will prepare Interface Control Documents, coordinating with Lead Engineers, Systems Engineers, and other stakeholders
  • You will recommend improvements to processes, methods, and tools

 


Requirements


For this position, you need to have:

  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, with a strong focus on design engineering and CATIA proficiency
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in design engineering, ideally in the space sector
  • At least 2 years of experience using CATIA V5 within the past 5 years
  • Proven experience in creating 2D manufacturing drawings (adding views, dimensions, hole and thread details, tolerances, surface treatment specifications, and manufacturer notes)
  • Solid understanding of geometrical tolerances and their application in 2D drawings
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, both independently and within a team
  • Proficiency in English

And it's an advantage if you have:

  • Knowledge of classical and numerical (Finite Element) stress analysis methods, as well as foundational mechanical and thermal design principles for space products
  • Experience with mechanisms, deployable structures, or optical instruments
  • Familiarity with IronCAD software
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides)
  • Conversational Dutch as a plus
