We are currently looking for an R&D Scientist - Advanced Battery Technology to join the team in Eindhoven.

We are looking for a Scientist in Next-Generation Battery Technology to help push the boundaries of energy storage. The team focuses on developing advanced battery technologies such as solid-state batteries, high-voltage lithium (sodium) metal batteries, and metal-air batteries using state-of-the-art thin-film and battery production techniques.

R&D Scientist - Advanced Battery Technology

Main responsibilities 

  • Lead and contribute to research on next-generation battery concepts, focusing on safety, energy and power density, inter-component stability, and production cost reduction at the battery cell level.
  • Develop and optimize new solvent-free, scalable, and sustainable manufacturing processes for electrode and electrolyte layers.
  • Assemble and test battery prototypes in both coin and pouch cell formats, evaluating key performance metrics such as cycle life, energy efficiency, and charge/discharge characteristics.
  • Utilize advanced physico-chemical (XRD, Raman), morphological (SEM), and electrochemical (impedance spectroscopy, galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry) characterization methods to analyze and improve battery components.
  • Design and develop large-area integrated thin-film battery architectures, exploring new material combinations and process flows to enhance battery performance.
  • File patents and contribute to intellectual property development based on innovative research findings.
  • Manage and participate in national and European-funded research projects, ensuring milestones and objectives are met while preparing technical reports and research plans.
  • Communicate findings at renowned international conferences, contribute to scientific publications, and present results to industry partners.
  • Work closely with engineers, scientists, and industry stakeholders to bridge the gap between research and practical applications.
  • Provide mentorship and supervision to junior researchers, students, and interns, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.

Requirements

  • PhD in a relevant field (Battery Technology, Chemistry, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or a related discipline).
  • At least 3 years of experience in battery R&D, with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • Coin and pouch cell assembly and electrochemical performance testing.
    • Thin-film deposition and advanced electrode preparation (wet/dry).
    • Solid-state electrolytes, lithium/sodium metal anodes, and next-generation cathode materials.
    • Electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution/reduction reactions in metal-air battery systems.
    • Advanced characterization techniques, including XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, EIS, galvanostatic cycling, and cyclic voltammetry.
  • A hands-on, problem-solving mindset with a strong ability to design and execute experiments independently.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage research projects, ensuring timely delivery of results.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken).
