About this job
We are currently looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the team in Dwingeloo.
This role focuses on designing and developing mechanical components for a specialized cryogenic subsystem within a large-scale astronomical instrument. As part of an international, interdisciplinary consortium, this position involves working on a project supported by a European research initiative, advancing from a successfully tested prototype to the final implementation phase.
Key objectives include Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT) of all subsystem components and ensuring performance verification, along with preparing comprehensive documentation packages, including Non-Compliance Reports and final as-built drawings, for project reviews.

Main responsibilities
- Detailed design of the opto-mechanical system and its components, leveraging an existing prototype
- Conduct design work within cryogenic and ultra-high vacuum conditions
- Perform subsystem performance modelling and analysis in collaboration with teams across mechanical, optical, and manufacturing disciplines
- Engage with external partners and suppliers to coordinate design activities
- Participate in project, system, and subsystem reviews
- Prepare and contribute to design and analysis reports
- Create 3D models and 2D drawings for manufacturing, as well as final as-built drawings
- Some travel within Europe and between project locations may be required
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience in opto-mechanical design, precision engineering, or a related space engineering field
- Proficiency in 3D CAD design, specifically with Siemens NX
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Expertise in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
- Experience in creating detailed engineering drawings for parts and assemblies
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience
- Strong English knowledge, both written and oral
- Familiarity with optical/infrared instruments and cryogenics is advantageous
